 BookWriter™ Professional: Tools & Utilities
Be Prepared may be the Boy Scout's motto, but it's just as meaningful for firemen, plumbers — and online sellers. How many times have you been faced with a data dilemma and discovered you didn't have the tools to handle it, or time to search for another solution?
Data needs are unpredictable. Perhaps you'll need to convert one file type into another, or extract some data automatically from 100,000+ records to send to a business partner. Or, globally edit your records, assign a batch of new images to records, look up a ZIP code — there are many possibilities.
The screen shots below represent just some of BwPro's tools, utilities & accessories. Though widely diverse in functionality, they all share a common objective: to help booksellers get special tasks done quickly and efficiently. In practice, most of these will be used only occasionally. Some are only needed once and never again. You may never need them at all. But it's sure a good feeling to know you're prepared when the time comes.

The ISBN Extraction Tool extracts ISBN codes from non-ISBN fields (such as Description, Comments, Notes etc). It validates each code and populates the dedicated ISBN field in each corresponding Inventory record (or copies it to another field, depending on the option selected). Note that this tool can be used on both BookWriter databases and on external UIEE files. If processing a BookWriter database, you can automatically queue modified records for upload. This is especially useful after importing records.
The Postal Code Reference and Mapping tool provides instantaneous access to US ZIP codes, Canadian Postal Codes and other geographic regions. The database resides in your computer and is updated periodically -- you do not need to access the Internet to perform lookups. For online applications, you can instantly generate a map of any selected area, or perform a search (the URL's used are configurable to allow you to use your favorite search engine and mapping service).

The Global Editor is a powerful field-matching and editing tool to allow you to make modifications to all or a portion of your database records. BookWriter contains no less than seven (7) Global Editors, as follows: (1) Text Editing, (2) Text Treatments, (3) Numeric Adjustments, (4) Erase Field(s), (5) Copy Field-to-Field, (6) Swap Fields, and (7) Modify UIEE Listing Codes. The screen shot below shows the Global Text Editor for Inventory and Wants Records. As can be seen a wide range of options and capabilities are offered:

The Image Viewer allows you to view images before assigning them to records. The dialogue is a resizable "floating" window and can remain on the desktop while working in other areas of the program. Click on the EDIT button to edit any image (in your favorite image editing program). The Image Viewer can also be used to display images as a slide show in sequence — you set the delay interval. It can also operate in full-screen mode for comfortable, efficient image viewing.
The Image Auto-Select feaure will scan for images in a selected location and automatically associate image files residing there with Inventory database records, based on the filenames used. This provides an extremely efficient means of post-processing images without ever having to open your database or perform any manual editing. Note that since existing image associations are retained, you can add images as desired without affecting anything else.
BookWriter Pro also offers a variety of data import and export features. The screen shot below shows a text import dialogue. Various options are available for processing different file types, including comma-delimited, tab-delimited, ASCII and others.
You can preview imported records before applying them to your database, or even confirm each record individually. A lot can go wrong when importing records, so BookWriter provides you with ways to avoid problems before they happen. You are not restricted to importing records and then determining after the fact if everything went the way you hoped it would.
There is also a Homebase™ Import Utility that allows you to directly read your existing Homebase database and pull records from it into BookWriter. The screen shot below shows the first of several dialogues associated with performing Homebase imports:
The Homebase™ Tagged Data to UIEE Converter takes raw ABE-format upload files and converts them into UIEE (Universal Information Exchange Environment) format. This is useful For those who wish to continue using their Homebase software, or who wish to distribute Homebase files to other selling venues, for import/export, or any other need your business may have.
The Desktop Setup dialogue provides you with the ability to customize your BookWriter desktop, establish startup settings, and configure the program to best suit your preferences and work requirements. Other capabilities and enhancements are being added on an on-going basis.
